What is Sound Healing?
Sound healing is the therapeutic application of sound frequencies to the mind and body. Its intention is to activate a state of inner harmony, and to improve our overall health, our mood and general wellbeing. Sound healing can encompass a variety of techniques including voice, music and instruments such as the gong, drums, singing bowls, bells and tuning forks.
How Does Sound Healing Work?
Everything in the universe vibrates at its own unique frequency called a resonant frequency. This includes all of the cells, tissues, and organs of our bodies. The cells of our body enjoy the vibration of sound. The human body is made up of 70% water which makes it a very good conductor.
When we are healthy, everything in our bodies is vibrating in harmony or resonance. Disease can result when natural resonances get out of tune – whether due to stress, illness or environmental factors. Through the concept of resonance and entrainment, sound can be used to change the vibration of the weakened area and bring it back to a healthy state of resonance.
The healing power of gongs and Himalayan singing bowls derives from a natural phenomenon known as entrainment, which synchronizes the body to a certain sound. Entrainment occurs when the powerful vibrations of one object actually change the less powerful vibrations of another object.
The Benefits of Sound Healing
Sound Healing can activate the body’s natural healing process. Among the many noted benefits include relief from pain and stress-related conditions, discomfort from fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and depression. Many have experienced improved memory, clarity, vitality, a deep sense of tranquility and improved sleep.
The gong is one of the oldest instruments of healing and has been used for thousands of years in meditation, ceremony and rituals. The Gong is an ideal tool for reducing stress, stimulating the glandular system, as well as a breaking up emotional blockages. The gong resonates all cells of the body simultaneously in a powerful and effective way. Today, they are used in yoga and meditation classes, sound therapy practice, group gong bath meditations and in palliative and cancer treatment centers to promote health and well-being.
Tibetan Singing Bowls
Tibetan Singing Bowls have been used for centuries for healing and meditation purposes. They create a range of sounds to restore the normal vibratory frequencies of parts of the body and mind that are out of harmony. The healing process is initiated through entraining our brainwaves to synchronize with the perfect resonance of the bowls. Unique tones create the perfect state for deep meditation, creative thinking and intuitive messages.
Drumming is an ancient approach that uses rhythm to promote healing and self-expression. The vibrations of the drum have a deep, transformative effect on the body, bringing about profound and lasting changes. Research supports that this therapeutic technique accelerates physical healing, boosts the immune system and produces feelings of well-being, a release of emotional trauma and reintegration of self. Repetitive drumming changes brain wave activity, inducing a state of calm and focused awareness.
Chanting-The Power of Voice
“When you sing, you pray twice”— St. Augustine
Chanting is the rhythmic speaking or singing of words or sounds, often primarily on one or two main pitches called reciting tones. The vibrations and rhythmic pronunciation has a physical affect on the body by slowing down the nervous system and calming the mind similar to what meditation does. When the mind is relaxed, your blood pressure decreases and ultimately the health of your heart
